In Scripture, the Moon is its own light

In scripture, the moon is a separate light bearer from the sun.  It is not merely a reflection of the sun.

“And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.”

Genesis 1:16-18 ESV

“to him who spread out the earth above the waters, for his steadfast love endures forever; to him who made the great lights, for his steadfast love endures forever; the sun to rule over the day, for his steadfast love endures forever; the moon and stars to rule over the night, for his steadfast love endures forever;”

Psalm 136:6-9 ESV

“Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the Lord of hosts is his name:”

Jeremiah 31:35 ESV

The earth is not shadowing the moon during its phases from the sun, there is another heavenly covering that spreads over the moon.

He covers the face of the full moon and spreads over it his cloud.

Job 26:9 ESV

In Joel and Matthew, we see the sun AND the moon are darkened. If the moon were merely a reflecting rock, God could merely darken the sun.

“The earth quakes before them; the heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.”

Joel 2:10 ESV

“The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.”

Joel 3:15 ESV

Furthermore, Matthew states the Moon HAS ITS OWN LIGHT in Matthew 24:29.

““Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.”

Matthew 24:29 ESV

In Revelation, John states that the independent lights of the sun, moon, and stars are each darkened separately:

“The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night.”

Revelation 8:12 ESV

Finally, Paul states the two great lights shine with SEPARATE glories:

“There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.”

1 Corinthians 15:41 ESV

    1. Yes, it seems in scripture the Sun/Moon are meant as 2 distinct sources of light, each with a different ‘glory’. It does not say one ‘glory’.
